General Description: The Coordinator of Forensic Nursing is responsible for all aspects of forensic nursing services (program), including oversight of Independent contracted S.A.N.E. & D.V.N.E. nurses. Responsible for peer review of patient files. Responsible for assuring WRC Rape Crisis Center is in compliance with CDC recommendations; changes in legislation; recommends programmatic changes in treatment to the Executive Director, works with Executive Director to set up clear boundaries/structure for Independent contracted nurses to adhere to, and provide oversight for ongoing training requirements. The Coordinator of Forensic Nursing may have the capacity to prescribe medications.
Coordinator of Forensic Nursing Job Responsibilities:
Completion of agency specific orientation (40 hours) and annual training (16 hours) as outlined in the policies and procedure manual.
Background check to include name based and fingerprint as required by agency and funding sources
Ability to perform and provide emergent medical triage of the presenting patient(s)
Ability to perform and document sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams accurately and timely
Ability to perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include: Head-to-toe medical assessment for trauma, detailed genital/anal examination;
Forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation;
Photo documentation of bodily and genital-anal injuries with competent documentation;
Assess for mandatory reporting status and report when appropriate;
Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines;
Ensure patient/medial record confidentiality at all times (HIPPA) and Oklahoma Title74 Section 18p-3;
Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests;
Ability to administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraception;
Coordinate referrals for appropriate follow-up care as needed;
Testify as fact witness to any/all cases performed while contracted as a SANE/DVNE
a. *Following employment/termination with the Women’s Resource Center as a SANE, it will remain to be an obligation of the individual RN/SANE to respond and coordinate with attorneys prior to and during the court process.
Required to be at the Rape Crisis Center 30 hrs per week unless meeting with community partners;
Participate in community awareness and outreach projects as needed and directed by the Executive Director
Administrative Duties and Supervision:
Maintain the Protocol for Administering Medication or plan of care policy-guidelines/instructions/protocol for providing medication.
Provide oversight for Independent Contractors to include contracts for the independent contracts are up to date and that the nurses have all of the required licensure, background check, workers comp waiver, insurance and annual training are current.
Recruit, train and schedule SANE/DVNEs.
Assist Executive Director with policies and procedures for the Women’s Resource Center Rape Crisis Center to ensure they accurately document service provision, evidence collection, medical care and protocols.
It is the responsibility of the Coordinator of Forensic Nursing to bring to the attention of the Executive Director and/or Medical Director any potential liabilities or issues as they relate to the forensic medical care provided at the Women’s Resource Center Rape Crisis Center and will act at all times in the best interest of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence within the structure, policies and procedures of the Women’s Resource Center.
Meet with the Executive Director bi-weekly.
Meet with Medical Director at least monthly.
Meet requirements for reporting to grants and other funding sources
Assist the Executive Director in preparation of reports, fiscal planning, and budget development.
Community Relations:
Assist in developing relationships with other agencies and medical professionals in our service area.
Network with professionals for effective coordination and continuity of service delivery to victims/survivors of sexual assault.
Network with professionals for effective coordination and continuity of service delivery to victims/survivors of domestic violence.
Work in partnership with the Coordinator of Rape Crisis Center Services in community relationships, development of SART, and education/training of law enforcement, medical professionals and others as requested dependent upon availability of both Coordinators.
Represent the Women's Resource Center as necessary.
General Duties:
Maintain Rape Crisis Center exam room to meet all fire, city and health codes.
Keep exam room supplied with medications, patient files and necessary supplies.
Peer review patient files.
Update new requirements specific to SANE/DVNE and CDC as needed.
Follow all Policies and Procedures of the Women's Resource Center, Inc.
Meet requirements as set out by Standard and Criteria of the Oklahoma Office of the Attorney General
Perform other duties as required
Requirements
Minimum Requirements
One to three years experience as an Adolescent/Adult SANE
Completion of Domestic Violence Forensic nursing course.
Completion of SANE didactic training. Successful completion of recommended clinical components to minimally include: -conducting at least 5 normal pelvic exams with 10 recommended -conducting at least 5 male genital exams with 10 recommended -shadowing an experienced SANE for 3 exams and being shadowed by an experience SANE for three exams. Proficient use of all equipment
Minimum two years nursing experience; specialty experience in women’s health
Ability to provide services as an employee of the Women’s Resource Center agency
Ability to identify when consultation with Executive Director and Medical Director is required before additional services are offered and assess if they fit within the mission and current services offered at the Women’s Resource Center.
Operate within the WRC agency policies and nursing scope of practice
CPR or BLS certified.
Understanding of the effects of trauma
General understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence.
General understanding of the dynamics of sexual assault-adult/adolescent
Individual or employment-based malpractice insurance (1,000,000/6,000,000)
Preferred Requirements
One to Three years training and experience in crisis intervention
Advanced Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive ability
Experience as DVNE
Experience with volunteers
Two Years experience in supervision of registered nurses
Familiarity with board of nursing requirements
Ability to work as part of a team.
