Position Title: Vice Chair of Clinical Operations
Department: Emergency Medicine
Location: Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai Health System
Reporting to: System Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine
The Department of Emergency Medicine, one of the largest in the country, seeks a dynamic and strategic physician leader to serve as Vice Chair of Clinical Operations.
Our faculty staff the hospitals within the Mount Sinai Health System (the Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai Queens, Mount Sinai Morningside, Mount Sinai West, Mount Sinai Brooklyn, Mount Sinai South Nassau, as well as affiliated hospitals including Elmhurst Hospital Center, Queens Hospital Center, and Richmond University Medical Center. The Emergency Medicine Service Line has almost 240 faculty, more than 100 physician assistants and nurse practitioners, and treat more than 600K patients annually. The Department is ranked number 3 in research funding from the National Institutes of Health, is home to 3 emergency medicine residencies, 9 fellowships (including one in Pediatric Emergency Medicine), and is affiliated with 2 pediatric residencies.
The Vice Chair will serve as the Chair’s principal delegate for clinical operations, providing strategic leadership, oversight, and direction across all clinical sites and programs. This individual will champion high-quality, patient-centered care; improve operational performance; and drive alignment across diverse practice environments. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader who combines clinical expertise with a deep understanding of systems-based practice, capable of leading transformative initiatives that advance the department’s mission across academic, community, and ambulatory settings.
Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership & Strategy

Provide executive leadership for clinical operations across all emergency medicine sites, including academic, community, and urgent care settings.

Represent the Department in systemwide forums focused on operations, and performance improvement.

Translate institutional and departmental strategic goals into actionable initiatives to improve patient flow, throughput, access, and clinical performance.

Oversee operational performance, ensuring consistent, efficient, and high-quality delivery of emergency care.

Lead systemwide initiatives to optimize length of stay, discharge processes, transitions of care, and resource utilization.
Program Development & Performance Optimization

Conduct comprehensive assessments of existing operational structures to identify gaps, inefficiencies, and opportunities for innovation.

Implement standardized processes, workflows, and clinical models that promote consistency and safety across all sites.

Partner with analytics, quality, and finance teams to develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance dashboards.

Utilize data-driven insights to drive improvements in patient experience, safety, and cost-effectiveness.

Promote efficient use of technology, including optimizing electronic health record workflows and documentation compliance.
Collaboration & Governance

Partner closely with Vice Chairs, Site Chiefs, Medical Directors, and hospital operations leaders to ensure coordinated, integrated, and system-aligned clinical operations.

Collaborate with nursing, advanced practice providers, and administrative leaders to enhance team-based care delivery and operational cohesion.

Participate in institutional planning and governance initiatives, representing the Department’s operational priorities at the system level.

Lead departmental efforts in disaster preparedness, surge capacity management, and emergency response planning.
Financial & Strategic Planning

Collaborate with the System Chair and System Administrator in the annual budgeting process and multi-year strategic planning.

Develop and implement financially sustainable operational strategies aligned with institutional value goals.

Evaluate staffing models, resource utilization, and clinical productivity to ensure fiscal responsibility and operational efficiency.

Expand departmental services, exploring opportunities for new programs, partnerships, and innovative care models.
Leadership & Faculty Development

Direct supervision over Emergency Medicine Medical Directors.

Oversee and mentor Medical Directors, Assistant Medical Directors, and other operational leaders, fostering a culture of accountability and professional growth.

Establish and monitor performance goals, providing regular feedback and evaluation.

Support faculty and staff engagement, well-being, and development initiatives.

Cultivate collaboration across the department’s academic, clinical, and administrative domains.
Clinical Excellence
- Maintain an active clinical presence to remain closely connected to frontline operations and the realities of emergency care delivery.

Ensure consistent adherence to evidence-based practices, regulatory compliance, and departmental quality standards.

Promote initiatives that enhance patient safety, satisfaction, and experience.

Lead by example in professionalism, ethical conduct, and commitment to continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
-
MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
-
Board-certified in Emergency Medicine or eligible for medical licensure in the State of New York.

Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in clinical operations within a complex health system or academic medical center.

Proven success in managing multidisciplinary teams and improving operational performance metrics.

Experience in hospital-wide flow, emergency care optimization, and cross-site integration.

Demonstrated excellence in communication, strategic thinking, and organizational leadership.
Preferred Qualifications:

Advanced degree in Healthcare Administration, Business, or Public Health (MBA, MHA, MPH, or equivalent).

Training or certification in Lean, Six Sigma, or performance improvement methodologies.
