Job Summary:
Registered Nurses (RN) observe, assess and report symptoms and conditions of patients. The position is required to take and record vital signs, assess body systems, educate patients on health issues, administer medications, provide point of care testing, and performs office administration duties. RNs follow standing orders, nursing protocols, and written policies as needed for the nursing management of patients.
RNs at the SHC provide outreach education to Fort Lewis College campus classes, events, clubs, and affinity centers. RNs provide administrative support to clinic office operations including Insurance Billing, Immunization Compliance, paying bills, ordering supplies, create and run reports that are communicated to Admissions and Registrar Departments on campus, participate in EMR implementation meetings, and integrate with Bursar and IT departments both on campus and with SHC EMR support for improved efficiencies in daily operations. RNs provide quality, affordable, inclusive, and convenient healthcare and treatment to FLC students.
It is essential for this position to be flexible and adaptable to a changing work environment and maintain professional relationships with all students, faculty, staff, and colleagues.
Requirements
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily nursing tasks.
- Maintain good working relationships with the Student Health Center staff, the Health Services Departments, the greater Fort Lewis College including all students, faculty, and staff, and the health care community in La Plata County and State CDPHE.
- Work within the scope of Registered Nurse training and experience.
- Follow the nursing standard of care guidelines at the Student Health Center.
- Provide excellence in customer service to students.
- Perform daily nursing and administrative tasks.
- Place IV and administer IVF replacement when directed by medical providers.
- Observe/assess and report symptoms and conditions of patients, record vital signs, educate patients on health issues, administer medications, provide point of care testing, and implements the nursing process.
- Makes decisions about health care needs of patients within the scope of nursing training and experience.
- Follows nursing standard-of-care guidelines in provision of health care services. Nurses observe and report symptoms and conditions of patients, develop nursing treatment plans, take and record vital signs, educate patients on health issues, administer medications, and implement the nursing process.
- Follows standing orders, nursing protocols, and written policies as needed for the nursing management of patients.
- Performs functions and duties at the Health Center in compliance with institutional policies of Fort Lewis College.
- Provide travel appointments to students providing researched data including CDC guidelines for travel vaccines: Yellow Fever, typhoid, and polio, and medications for malaria prevention and traveler’s diarrhea treatments.
- Draw labs on patients and perform point of care testing on them if needed.
- Process labs according to Labcorp/ARUP Guidelines including researching correct specimen tubes/containers, centrifuge, use of LabCorp interface within EMR to route and print proper requisitions and insurance information.
- Follow established guidelines/protocols to provide safe and effective nursing care.
- Promote healthy lifestyles through best practice and researched standards.
- Reconcile lab statements with visit statements.
- Knowledge of proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and visits, diagnosis, and procedures.
- Work closely with the Health and Well-being and Student Engagement Departments to provide wrap around care to FLC students.
- Represent the Student Health Center at student orientation, outreach programs, health promotion fairs, and classroom education opportunities.
- Provide flu clinics and flu education to campus community.
- Help students with their understanding of the COVID isolation and quarantine protocols and supports Pandemic Management.
- Order medical supplies from McKesson and the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment.
- Maintain lab equipment including sterilizer protocols, coordinate microscope maintenance, order test kits, eye wash station, and maintain annual lab skill competencies for SHC staff.
- Is foremost and always a “Teacher of Health” and promotes healthy lifestyles.
- Submit weekly flu/COVID-19 data to LPCHD.
- Clean patient rooms, the lab, and the pharmacy.
- Stock patient rooms with supplies and over the counter medications.
- Sterilize equipment and clean the autoclave.
- Clean laundry for patient care including linens, gowns, and towels.

Required Education, Specialized Skills and Experience*
Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.
Current Colorado RN License, CPR certification, and be adept at IV insertion and lab draws.
Excellent customer service.
Experience using Electronic Medical Record systems
Experience maintaining confidential patient medical information.
Proven positive and professional working relationships following medical directives of effective nursing care.
Preferred Specialized Skills and Experience:
Minimum 2 years clinical experience providing Acute and Chronic Care
Preferred experience in providing:
o College Health
o Mental Health
o Sports medicine
o Travel health
o Immunizations
Specialized Skills:
o IV catheter placement
o Lab draw experience
o Providing classroom education talks
o Assessment skills utilizing nursing protocols
Abilities: Proven experience working efficiently and multi-tasking in a fast-paced office; show attention to detail; work with minimal supervision
